Big Time Means
Seikima-II's 'Big Time Changes' is considered a turning point for the band. This was the first album Sgt. Luke Takamura III played on. This album is the first one written by the final lineup of the band. 'Big Time Changes' is a positive change when compared to 'From Hell with Love'. The song writing and playing are much tighter, and the continuity is improved.
The album opens up with 'Rock'n'Roll Prisoner', a standard opening track for the band. It's got some nice riffs and nice drumming. Demon's voice sounds slightly thin at parts, but he still lays down very catchy vocal lines. The solo on this one doesn't show much in terms of speed, but is very melodic. It seems slightly out of place in a song like this. The song then goes to Demon talking to a sampled crowd, while the riffs get meatier. This is a very nice touch to a song that would sound great in a live setting.
The next song, Earth Eater, is a very funky, catchy song. This one has a GREAT bass line from Xenon. Demon comes in strong while the bass continues on. It's good to have a song where the guitars take a backseat to another instrument. The riffs are not the main focus, but they aren't out of place. The guitars pick up some when the band hits the chorus. Next is a small interlude with Demon talking, while the rest of the band sings along. The solo on this one is melodic, but not out of place. The bass line is still strong and catchy as the solo is going on.
1999 Secret Object is considered one of Seikima-II's anthems. The opening riff on this one is powerful, with a great beat by Raiden. Demon goes into some of S-II's most memorable vocal lines. The bass and rhythm guitars provide a stable foundation, while the lead plays a catchy bridge. The chorus line is one that will stick in your mind after this album is done. Winrar 64 bit pro download. Great to sing along to. The solo provides the first real taste of Luke's speedy playing. The tone is sweet, and the notes are all in the right place. It could be slightly longer, though. The last riffs, along with Demon's awesome scream provide a great climax to the song.
Frog Night is a song reminiscent of 'Demon's Night' off of 'The End of the Century'. The bass and guitar are slower on this song, and Demon's vocals add a bit of mystery and growl. The parts where Demon is trading off vocals with the rest of the group adds to the familiarity to 'Demon's Night'. The solo uses nice tone and good squeals. Despite being a dark, heavy song, the sweet, meaty tone of the solo are perfect for this song.
Yaburenu Yume No Naka De is a nice change of pace from the previous song. This one goes at a much faster tempo with some chunky riffs. The bass line is simple, but stands out well in the recording. The vocal lines and drumming are pretty generic on this one. However, the chorus will always make start to sing out. The solo combines very nice use of speed, tone, and excellent riffage. One of my favorites from this album.
Big Time Changes is another well known song by them. This one is more of a straight hard rock-metal song, with great riffs, and a well done scream at the beginning. Most of the focus in this song is turned towards the vocals. Demon does a great job with the high screams, chorus, and vibrato. The chants the rest of the band does along with him are a very nice touch. The solo is your average Big Time Changes era solo, focusing more on melody than technicality.
The next track, Never Ending Darkness, is one of the high points of the album. The opening guitar line is quiet and foreboding. Demon comes in with some impressive singing. It adds to the bleak nature of this track. His use of phrasing and vibrato are excellent. There is small keyboard movement to add to the atmosphere. The song then comes in with bass, drums, and rhythm guitar. The leads on this track are very appropriate for the track, and show a great deal of restraint. The song is constantly building up to a great climax. This fades away into the intro part, then back into a full band. This song is a great place for Luke and Ace to show off their guitar prowess, with solos packed with emotion. Demon adds some more nice lines before the end.
The Final Apocalypse is a very strange track. This one is dominated by bass, keyboards, and vocals. Demon changes his tone to one of woe. His voice is perfectly shaped to match the tone of the song. The drum sound on this song is a bit grating, and the guitar riffs are a bit low in the mix. The end of the song is another spot for a melodic guitar solo, which has been done just a bit too much at the moment.
Creeping Twilight segues from The Final Apocalypse via a ear shattering scream from Demon. I felt the drums were much better on this track, and the use of backing vocals is very effective. The solo is a bit short, which I appreciated on this track. The chorus is catchy, but not as much as the others.
Angel Smile is a very interesting song, and a good change of pace for the album. This one is slower, with the sweet bass tone and keyboards taking the lead. This track features Luke singing. This one works for him, because of his high, breathy singing. The snare could have been turned down a bit in the mix. The keyboards give off a very 80's vibe, which makes me very nostalgic. Luke takes a break and lets the acoustic guitar have a solo, which was perfect for this track. Not too loud, and with a sweet, melodic line. Luke could have used a bit more vibrato to make his tone a bit warmer towards the end, though. This is a nice way to end the album.
The album suffers from very few problems, and they are not evident on every track. The album mix was a bit weak, however. I blame this partially on the recording methods they were forced to use during this time. The melodic guitar solos, nice bass work, and excellent song writing help make this album a great one. However, Demon seems to be holding back somewhat on this album. There are parts on this album he could really amaze us on, but doesn't. The band more than makes up for this, however.
